Histopathology is the gold standard for identifying and assessing the true extent of organ damage but it is seldom possible in human renal medicine. Non-invasive, cell specific biomarkers can localise injury to specific cell types leading to earlier, more quantitative monitoring of renal injury and recovery. Examples of their use in renal medicine and drug development are discussed.

In 2004, Biotrin embarked on a project with the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) organised Nephrotoxicity Working Group (NWG) with a clear aim of building consensus around scientifically valid approaches for the validation of new biomarkers of toxicity such that they may gain scientific and regulatory acceptance.
